Taking 2020 Back From the Pandemic

by Sonya Leung December 15, 2020
    written by Sonya Leung

This year the University of Alberta’s Winter Closure will span from December 25, 2020 to January 3, 2021. Here is where you can find dates of closure and resumption of our library services.

PANDEMIC — is the word that defines the year 2020. I know I am not alone when I say this year has been HARD.

That is why I propose that we take the 10 days of Winter Closure as a time to stop thinking about how COVID-19 has wrecked our lives and take the last days of the year to reset our brains. My three suggestions to do so are:

    1. Senseless (or Purposeful) Binge Watching

Nestling into my couch with snacks and a blanket is one of my favourite ways to reset. Three places to do some binge watching are Alexander Street, Criterion-on-Demand and Kanopy. Here are some films/performances to kickstart your bingeing:

A scene of a horse with a human body speaking to a woman.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Julie Taymor
    RBG movie poster
RBG : The Exceptional Life and Career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
    Doctor Sleep movie poster
    Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep
    The Handmaiden movie poster.
    The Handmaiden
Rodents of Unusual Size movie poster.
    Rodents of Unusual Size
The little mermaid ballerina dancing in the ballet
The Little Mermaid, Ballet by John Neumeier

    2. Headphones & Playlists

Plug your headphones in and dance like no one is watching or close your eyes and travel to a harmonious new world without leaving your chair.

Two places where you can find a musical escape are Naxos and Alexander Street. Earlier in the year my colleague,  Bojan Kumovic, shared tips on HOW TO SEARCH LIBRARY STREAMING MUSIC DATABASES TO FIND YOUR BLUE NOTE. Here are some albums to hit play on your musical journey :

    Album cover for Broadway Blockbusters
    Broadway Blockbusters
Album cover for Benny Carter's The Verve Small Group Sessions.
    The Verve Small Group Sessions
Album cover for Deitrich Buxteude Scandinavian Cantatas
    Deitrich Buxteude Scandinavian Cantatas

    3. Audio & eBooks

Our friends at the Edmonton Public Library have a huge selection of audio and ebooks that are great for leisure reading/listening. Your free connection to their collection is here, through the L-Pass. Some titles to plug-in-to or read on your device are:

    Comic cover for Snotgirl
    Snotgirl
    No Time Like the Future
Book cover of Murder Freshly Baked.
    Murder Freshly Baked

Have a safe and restful Winter Break!

As the seasons change and the demand for our library material continues, here is how we have evolved our pickup service into what we at University of Alberta Library call Curbside 2.0. The use of lockers is the main…
