    What Will Fall 2020 Look Like at the Library?

    This fall semester looks different at the UAlberta Library but we assure you that we have put services into place that put our users’ health and safety first. Our collection is vitally important to students, researchers, faculty, and staff. We look optimistically to the upcoming semester; helping you with your studies and courses. We’re here for you online (and always have been!).

    Important changes to note are:

    • Cameron Library study space: capacity will be increased to 150 on the main and basement levels. Students and Staff may book up to 2 days (48 hours) in advance for a maximum of 2.5 hours at a time (one booking per day) [link coming soon!].
    • Entry is with your valid, physical ONEcard via the West CAB doors.
    • Cameron Library will be closed on Sundays & Holidays
      • Cameron Library will be closed Monday, August 31 to transition to higher occupancy for the Fall semester. Thank you for your understanding.
    • Borrowing books: as of September 1 our Curbside Pickup Service will open up to participating NEOS Libraries.
    • We have a new Online Course Materials service. Course Materials (Reserves) are not available in print.
    • Chat service hours are extended to 8 PM, Monday to Thursday.

    Online Services

    The library has been delivering online services and virtual access to our collection for over a decade. Don’t be afraid to ask us about any questions about the library, resources, or research help.

    We’re in our element right now. Although, we do miss seeing your smiling faces.

    Online Collections

    Online databases, journals, e-books, oh my!

    • Start your search for books, journal articles, and all types of information using various tools and links on the library website. 
      • HOT TIPS TO SEARCH THE LIBRARY:
        • Books, journals (not articles), music, maps: Start with “search the library” box
        • Articles: Start with “Find articles” or Subject Guides by topic
        • Films: Subject Guide – Audio and Video Resources

    Service

    Course materials and Online Reading Lists

    Because of health and safety requirements regarding quarantine periods for physical items, lending print textbooks for short term loans will not be possible in Fall 2020. Library staff can help instructors identify library materials, or alternative sources of course material that is both online, and no-cost or low-cost to students.

    The Library has purchased a new Course Materials & Reading List system, which is integrated with eClass. Faculty are encouraged to add this tool in their eClass and easily create their reading lists, which can be reviewed by library staff for access to each resource.

    Physical Collection

    Curbside Pick-up

    Do you need to borrow items in our physical collection? You can request books and collect them from our Curbside Pick-up locations: Rutherford Library in Edmonton and Augustana Library in Camrose. 

    We’ve been lending UA Library materials to UA staff & students since late June. For Fall 2020, you will also be able to request items from participating NEOS Libraries.

    Research is still developing about COVID-19 on circulating items so they spend 3 days in quarantine after they are returned and our stacks are still closed for browsing.

    Space

    Cameron Library is open with restrictions. All other library locations remain closed.

    • Cameron Computing and Study Space (main floor and basement) – by reservation only; remains restricted to students, staff, faculty only. Occupancy will be expanded to 150.
      • Hours: Mon-Friday: 8a – 6p  / Saturday: 11a – 6p / Sunday: CLOSED
      • Cameron Library will be closed Monday, August 31 to transition to higher occupancy for the Fall semester. Thank you for your understanding.
    • We have a new seat booking/check-in system to ensure safe shared use of the space. Starting September 1, you must have a reservation to enter Cameron Library. Students and Staff may book up to 2 days (48 hours) in advance for a maximum of 2.5 hours at a time (one booking per day). Link coming soon!
    • Please be aware of the guidelines and restrictions in the space and remember to limit your time on campus. Masks and physical distancing are mandatory. Food and drink are not allowed.
