Browsing our Collections: Leisure Reading in STEM

by Elisabet Ingibergsson July 8, 2024
    written by Elisabet Ingibergsson

Browsing the library shelves at the University of Alberta Library can be a fairly daunting process. We have eight library locations spread across four campuses! Where to begin? Today we are taking a look at leisure reading books from the Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

In the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), reading often means tackling dense, technical texts. However, there’s a growing collection of lighter, more accessible STEM books that make complex topics enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or simply a curious enthusiast, these books offer a fun and enlightening way to explore the wonders of science and technology.

This blog article was inspired by a book display that caught my eye at our Cameron Science and Technology Library this spring. Many thanks to Debbie Feisst, Head, Faculty Engagement (Natural + Applied Sciences) and Grace Telder-Romanow, Information Services Specialist for these wonderful book suggestions!

Click the book cover images above for the direct link to the NEOS catalogue. Many of these books are available in digital format but we may also have access to print versions so let us know if you need help.

by Elisabet Ingibergsson April 18, 2023

This post was originally published in July 2021 Planning and researching destinations for summer adventures is a favorite pastime of mine – and I usually begin early in the New Year. Nothing beats the winter blues better than curling up on a cold winter’s evening with calendars, google maps and guide books open in front of me. This year was no exception although back in January these plans were somewhat of a…

by Guest Author January 10, 2023

Our student colleague Lothian Taylor shares her “great escapes” book suggestions. Lothian is a student in the University of Alberta Masters of Library and Information Studies program, and also works at our library service desk and behind the scenes answering online chat questions! As 2022 was ending, and I was brainstorming this month’s book display, Edmonton was met with a cold snap. While students worked on their final exams and projects, the…

Underground, underwater, in the air, amidst the trees, miraculous organisms adapt and thrive through a host of survival strategies; not to mention the relationships they forge with other creatures they share the…

  • Diasporic Vietnamese narratives

by Elisabet Ingibergsson December 8, 2021
by Elisabet Ingibergsson December 8, 2021

Today we shine the spotlight on authors of Vietnamese ancestry. In the aftermath of the Vietnam War (also known as the American War) and the fall of Saigon in 1975 there was a great exodus and many refugees eventually found their way to Canada. By 1982 more than 120,000 had been resettled in Canada (Canadian Red Cross) – considered our largest humanitarian undertaking to that point.  Many of these families made their…

With the library stacks still closed, let me take you all on a short browse through the stacks to explore some books about Art. I at first felt a bit intimidated on how to approach such a wide and impactful topic. The word ‘art’…
