Lest We Forget with University of Alberta Archives

by Sonya Leung November 9, 2022
    written by Sonya Leung

This post was originally published in November 2020.

On November 11 we will pause to honour the soldiers that have fought for Canada and to support the Canadian Troops.

In addition to pausing for a day to honour the soldiers, I thought another way to appreciate the Canadian soldiers would be to showcase photos of the University of Alberta’s connection to World War I (WWI). With the help of our colleagues at University of Alberta Archives (UAA), here is a small sample of archival photos to help us relearn history and honour our soldiers.

Photo of the War Memorial Plaque.

As Fraser explained, UAA does not have a specific fonds for WWI but does have fonds on topics related to the University of Alberta and WWI. For those who are unfamiliar with archival terminology, “fonds” is an archival term that is used to describe a group of records from the same origin/creator. It’s a group of records from either an organization, person, or family which were created/accumulated as a result of the organic processes and functions of the creator. Fonds is one of the highest levels in the hierarchy of the archival description.

Some of the fonds held at UAA where you will find these photos are:

    • Canadian Officers’ Training Corps
    • Soldiers Comfort Club
    • Henry Marshall Tory
    • Cecil Scott Burgess
    • Khaki University of Canada (Subseries)

by Elisabet Ingibergsson October 11, 2022

Today we are shining a light on resources reflecting the rich culture of Iran as well as their ongoing struggle for women’s rights.  A few weeks ago a young Iranian woman by the name of Mahsa Amini was arrested for wearing a hijab too loosely. Three days later she was dead. Mahsa Amini’s death resulted in a series of large-scale protests in Iran and an international call for change – freedom and…

  • To ILL or Not ILL?

by Guest Author October 4, 2022

We have a pretty extensive collection here at the University of Alberta Library. Between print books & periodicals, electronic books, journal articles, streaming video and audio, and miscellaneous kits, games and more, there’s no lack of resources to explore. As Junelle explained in her recent post, there are limits to what we have access to. Sometimes we have to cast our nets wider and borrow items from libraries outside of the NEOS…

by Junelle Mah September 27, 2022

The University of Alberta Library fields a number of different questions through our service desks and chat service. A common question that regularly pops up involves the term Interlibrary Loan or ILL for short. But what is an ILL? An Interlibrary Loan refers to an item that does not exist within the U of A Library’s holdings, nor the holdings of NEOS, which is a consortium that U of A belongs to.…

With high prices at the pumps and chaos at our airports, why not discover adventure from the comfort of home? Whether planning a road trip across Canada, retracing an intrepid Viking voyage, or cycling the tour…

The Canadian Indigenous music scene is home to sounds and styles that encompass all genres. In celebration of National Indigenous History Month we are highlighting a few of the talented musicians whose work celebrates Indigenous cultures. Their music and vocals entertain but also educate and challenge us by focusing attention on crucial issues. Willie Dunn – Performing at folk festivals in the 1960s and 70s his compositions gave an eloquent voice to…

by Elisabet Ingibergsson May 24, 2022
by Elisabet Ingibergsson May 24, 2022

by Guest Author April 20, 2022

This Friday, April 22, is Earth Day. It is a chance for us to reflect on the planet we occupy and explore the ways we can lessen our impact on it. There are no limits to the wonders of nature. Underground, underwater, in the air, amidst the trees, miraculous organisms adapt and thrive through a host of survival strategies; not to mention the relationships they forge with other creatures they share the…
