    written by Guest Author

The University of Alberta Library continues to add to our openly accessible digital collections. We are excited to share the latest additions to the Edmonton Queer History Collection. This collection includes 2SLGBTQ+ community magazines, newsletters, and items of historical significance and is made possible through our ongoing partnership with the Edmonton Queer History Project and MacEwan University Archives.

    New Additions

This new batch includes significant materials that highlight the rich and diverse history of the queer community in Edmonton. Featured items include the GALA Newsletter, Webspinner, AIDS Network of Edmonton Newsletter, and the Newsletter of the Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians, Bisexuals, Gays, and Transgenders. These resources offer valuable insights into the experiences, struggles, and victories of the local queer community in the late 20th century. Explore these newly added materials and dive deeper into Edmonton’s queer history!

    Digitized Collections

University of Alberta Library’s digitized collections represent unique and distinctive materials identified for inclusion in our collections for their research, teaching, and learning value. Have a look at a selection of our most popular collections. More information about our Digitization activities can be found at: library.ualberta.ca/digital-initiatives/digitization.

Thank you to Sarah Nocente, Academic Library Resident in Digital Production + Preservation Services for sharing these collections with us.

by Elisabet Ingibergsson October 2, 2024

  • Graphic Novels to discover and explore! – Campus Pride Week 2022

by Elisabet Ingibergsson March 14, 2022
by Elisabet Ingibergsson March 14, 2022

Previously relegated to the realm of gay underground publications, queer “comix” and graphic novels have come a long way over the past 6 decades. Early creators used pseudonyms to protect their identities to avoid putting themselves at risk during a time when they could be criminally prosecuted. LGBTQ activity was considered a crime in Canada until 1969, when Bill C-150 was passed into law. Depictions of gay sexuality were considered “obscene” back…

  • Explore Queer Theory and LGBTQ Resources Digitally

by Hanne Pearce June 18, 2020
by Hanne Pearce June 18, 2020

With restrictions on mass gatherings still in place, many of us are looking for other ways we can celebrate Pride season with LGBTQ2S+ communities. Reading and learning about sexual minority issues in academic and non-academic literature is one way we can participate in Pride this year.  I recently broadened my own understandings in this area, when I was asked to conduct a literature review into queer theory for our team learning purposes.…

by Emily Zheng April 9, 2020

Last month, in honour of Pride Week 2020, we got together at the Digital Scholarship Centre to talk about Gender & Sexuality Primary Resource collections. Now that most of us are hunkering down to do research at home, we wanted to share those collections online! In the last few decades, research into LGBTQ2S+ studies have grown exponentially. As a result, there are growing numbers of projects which aim to collect materials that…
