De-Stressing Tips from Library Staff | Part II

by Junelle Mah December 4, 2020
    written by Junelle Mah
In awe of the beautiful colours used in this watercolour, painted by our Strategic Communications Manager, Meredith.

It is widely known that library staff are always willing to offer helpful tips and advice…call it an occupational hazard! Lucky for us, we received such a wealth of self-care tips from our colleagues that we had to create a second part to our Fall 2020 Staff De-stressing Tips blog! To catch up on Part I, take a peek here… otherwise sit back, relax, and enjoy Part II!

    Eva, Information Services Specialist

Self-care for Eva is a hot bath, tea or wine, a candle and Netflix. She says she’s definitely binged on baths since the start of the pandemic.

My bath potions usually consist of whatever catches my eye at Winners; they always have fun arrays of bubbles!

I take the tablet in with me. I just finished watching Holidate with Emma Roberts (7/10 but amusing), and am continuing ever so slowly with Queen’s Gambit, Queer Eye, Great Canadian Bake Show and Schitt’s Creek… all as fabulously amusing and interesting as the other.

Michelle, Aquisitions Editor, University of Alberta Press

Off the top of my head, when I’m stressed and feeling stuck, I like to listen to this song really loud and dance around – it has a great message and always lifts my mood…I love this song – the whole album is great.

Work with What You Got by soCalled, from their album Sleepover.

    Meredith, Strategic Communications Manager

I like to watercolour paint in front of the fireplace while watching really low-stakes TV shows like Star Trek Voyager, Great British Bake Off or Murder, She Wrote. But still daydreaming of the mountains…

This beautiful piece is an ode to the larch season. For more of Mer’s watercolour abstract mountain series, feel free to check out her blog.

    Liz, Health Sciences Librarian

Starting to jog has made a huge difference in my mental health in the last month even with the subzero temps. Cross country skiing too!

    Doris, Humanities/Social Sciences/Law Librarian

One of my de-stressors has been being able to go outside for walks over the past 8 months. I was able to explore my neighbourhood, other areas in and around town and the River Valley. Whether it’s short or long walks, venturing out with headphones and a podcast, harvesting my own tomatoes, or just mentally going over the grocery list while walking to the store it has all been good…well, maybe except for the mosquitoes this summer and when it eventually will hit -20. Fresh air and sunshine have been good for my soul.

We wish you the best as you near the end of this unique Fall 2020 semester. Our Library staff are here to support you as you find those final bits of information for your term papers or need advice on where to find a citation guide. Just Ask Us!

Thanks for the view! We invite you to subscribe to our newsletter (scroll down to the bottom right side of this page). Love us on the blog? Then you’ll love us on social media! Check us out at @uofalibrary on Facebook, Instagram, & Twitter!

  • Happy World Hello Day!

by Junelle Mah November 19, 2020
by Junelle Mah November 19, 2020

A simple greeting can open connections and communication between people. It can be a one word, a smile, a nod. Today, along with our University of Alberta community, we celebrate World Hello Day (a little early, we know). Taken from the University’s Days of Action site, “World Hello Day—is a global event with 180 countries taking part—created in 1973 to respond to the conflict between Egypt and Israel. Using communication instead of…

  • Des conseils avisés de professionnels expérimentés

by Junelle Mah October 29, 2020
by Junelle Mah October 29, 2020

  • Seasoned Advice from Seasoned Pros

by Junelle Mah October 15, 2020
by Junelle Mah October 15, 2020

Is hindsight the best sight? For staffers seasoned in the library sciences, the answer is yes! We polled our multi-disciplinary team of library whizzes and asked, “What one library resource did you wish you knew about/had access to when you were a student?“ Almost immediately, David Sulz (Academic Librarian) replied back with the Oxford English Dictionary. While our holdings include physical copies, the most up-to-date edition is our online version. It contains…

  • Finding Connections in Community and Space | An Alumna Looks Back

by Junelle Mah September 24, 2020
by Junelle Mah September 24, 2020

Happy Alumni Week to one and all in our green and gold community. When you work on the campus of your alma mater, you can’t help but be surrounded by the nostalgia of your (now seemingly) carefree days as a student. Sure the faces and some of the buildings change, but the feelings of familiarity and good memories remain. As a proud Human Ecology alumna (with ALES, back when it was AgForHE),…

  • Happy Heritage Day: Our Staff Serve Up Their Family Faves in Absence of Yearly Festival

by Junelle Mah July 31, 2020
by Junelle Mah July 31, 2020

There is no denying that a strong connection exists between family (blood or chosen), friends, food, and festivity. A highlight of summers-past in the City of Edmonton includes the ever-popular and wildly tasty Heritage Festival; an August long weekend sun-soaked celebration of our multicultural city. During this time, Hawrelak Park comes alive with a diverse display of various ethnic delights, including food! The current pandemic climate continues to change agendas;  we are…

by Junelle Mah May 15, 2020

For our University of Alberta Library staff, April showers (and snow), bring May flowers (and vegetable seedlings)! An email call-out to our folks to share their ‘green (and gold) thumbs’ yielded such an abundant crop of photos that we need to dig through this series as a trilogy! Stay tuned to our blog over the next three Fridays so we can give you all the dirt (presented in no particular order)! A…
