by Junelle Mah April 1, 2025
    written by Junelle Mah

The Library, along with our partners from the Faculty of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies (GPS), are pleased to announce the return of our annual Images of Research Competition and Exhibition (IOR). The eighth year of IOR opens for submissions on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. We invite current U of A graduate students from all disciplines to capture, share and present the essence of their research in one image.

The IOR competition, exhibition, and showcase for semi-finalists preserve graduate research in digital form, providing an opportunity for graduate students to communicate their research in a different medium and capture the attention of new audiences.

A multidisciplinary jury will select semi-finalists and winners for first, second, and third place, while an online People’s Choice vote will be made available for the public to choose their favourite; this link will be made available on the IOR website from Monday, May 12 to Sunday, May 25.

All IOR submissions will be showcased on our digital gallery, while semi-finalists and winners will have their entries deposited into ERA, the U of A’s education and research archive. Additionally, all semi-finalists and winners will have their entry displayed in an Exhibition beginning Thursday, May 29th in our Digital Scholarship Centre (DSC); all 2025 IOR winners will be announced during the Exhibition Opening.

Graduate students can attend an IOR workshop in the DSC on Friday, April 4 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm; see CampusBridge for details.

The IOR website has been revamped for the 2025 season. Please visit uab.ca/ior for full details, including competition timelines, image preparation tips, news stories, and more! Explore past IOR winners, including the 2024 IOR winner, Mosaic of Symbiosis, Mosaic of Life by Arseniy Velosokhov (below).

For any questions regarding Images of Research, please contact Jay Friesen, PD Instructional Designer (GPS) at jayf@ualberta.ca.

Best wishes to all 2025 competitors!
