    Happy World Hello Day!

by Junelle Mah November 19, 2020

UAlberta Librarian Céline with robots in her hand.

A simple greeting can open connections and communication between people. It can be a one word, a smile, a nod. Today, along with our University of Alberta community, we celebrate World Hello Day (a little early, we know).

Taken from the University’s Days of Action site, “World Hello Day—is a global event with 180 countries taking part—created in 1973 to respond to the conflict between Egypt and Israel. Using communication instead of force as a tool to promote peace, this day encourages each of us to say “hello” to ten people, be it an old friend or someone new. Extending a greeting is also one of the steps we can take to create and build social connections with others”.

Our staff at the U of A Library compiled some of our favourite quotes, pictures and Bitmoji’s to send some virtual cheer to our community. These are words that move us and images that convey the spirit of solidarity during these challenging times spent apart.

As we adjust to our new routines at home, during this period of physical distancing, we are finding new and old ways to help pass the time and connect with our families. We did a call-out to our library staff for folks to send in their hobby photos. And we received an impressive…

  • New display asks, “where would you go when you don’t have a place to sleep?”

by Guest Author February 4, 2020
by Guest Author February 4, 2020

Where would you go if you didn’t have a place to sleep? Sadly, this is a problem that over 70,000 post-secondary students across Canada face (Weissman et. al, 2019). When we think of homelessness, many of us picture someone living on the street or relying on public shelters for a safe haven, but many people without permanent residence make up the hidden homeless population. Those who find themselves among the hidden homeless…
