Open Education is back (but really it never left!). We’re excited about the annual Open Education Week – March 3-7, 2025 as this gives us the ongoing opportunity to showcase all the amazing Open Education work happening here at the University of Alberta.

Join us during this year’s Open Education Week in celebrating how Students (you) and Instructors (you too!) have been leading the charge on affordability and accessibility at the University of Alberta  through Open Educational Resources (OER)!

Open Education is a movement that encourages sharing and collaborating through licenses that permit free access or reuse, ideally with accessible formats, for course materials. OER practices such as co-creation and customization of learning resources are important and are supported by students and instructors (you again!).

Why do we keep saying you did this? BECAUSE YOU DID! Through…

U of A Instructor-created OER: Accessible openly-licensed textbooks published by University of Alberta instructors.

The Zero-Textbook Cost (ZTC) Program

ZTC courses include OER or licensed library materials, which means no extra costs for students.  Overall, ⅓ of Winter 2025 classes were ZTC!

Faculties with significant increases in the number of ZTC courses from Winter 2022 to Winter 2025:

Some other faculties excelling at ZTC in the Winter 2025 semester are the Faculty of Agriculture Life & Environmental Science (40% of classes), Augustana (51% of classes) and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (36% of classes)
