Here at the Library, we are so excited about Pride Week, which officially kicks off on Sunday, March 8, 2020!

Pride Week 2020: March 9 to March 15. uab.ca/pride

As in previous years, you can expect to see a variety of book displays across several library locations. Additionally, we have been working with the wonderful folks at iSMSS to bring you some events:

Club de lecture de bouquins d’enfants

  • Date: Lundi 9 Mars 2020
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Pride of Place: The Power of Queer Western Histories (a public talk by Dr. Valerie Korinek)

  • Date: Tuesday, March 10, 2020
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Location: ECHA 2 – 150

In this public talk, Dr. Korinek will share histories of the queer west from the 1930s-1985, drawing on her research from her recently published book Prairie Fairies.  Her talk will highlight women’s and men’s experiences across the prairies, in both urban and rural settings.  “Pride of Place” offers a corrective to the conventional narratives of the west that omit, or exclude, queer people and queer histories.  Equally important, this lecture offers histories of resistance, resilience and activism throughout the region. Free Event. Please RSVP via EventBrite.

Is Tango all we got? Evaluating LGBTQ+ children’s picture books

  • Date: Tuesday, March 10, 2020
  • Time: 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Location: L-110 Education North

Curious about LGBTQ+ children’s picture books? Join us for an award winning workshop to learn what’s out there and how to choose the best books! At this workshop, you can expect to become familiar with the canon of LGBTQ+ children’s picture books, and develop some skills in how to evaluate LGBTQ+ children’s picture books.

Let’s Talk About [Gender and] Sex(uality).. Primary Resource Research Collections

  • Date: Wednesday, March 11, 2020
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Location: Digital Scholarship Centre (DSC), 2nd floor Cameron Library

Join us at the DSC for a 45 minute saunter through some interesting examples of primary source collections held by the library. We will also discuss where collections like these come from, the people who collected them, as well as the hows and whys. Come to explore potential sources for your own research, or just look at some neat things from the past!

Visit the Pride Week 2020 website to volunteer, and learn more, and find tips for allies.
