The University of Alberta Library subscribes to numerous databases that are core for certain disciplines, but also really deserving of wider attention. Whether for class or for a bit of break, check out a selection of our most popular streaming services.

Kanopy is a large collection of films from sources worldwide including documentaries, training films and theatrical releases. This streaming database offers professors, researchers and students access to a large variety of feature films on-line from home and campus, at the click of a button.

On the Kanopy homepage, you’ll see “shelves” of film collections with a common subject or theme. If you’re browsing the Kanopy website on a computer, you’ll also see a banner at the top of the homepage highlighting seasonal collections or featured films. Click the banner to browse the featured collection. The films and collections displayed on the homepage change over time.

To see a specific category of films, hover over Browse at the top of the page on the website, or tap Browse in the bottom nav bar of the mobile app. Then, select a category to browse shelves with that theme. For example, if you select “Classic Cinema,” you might see shelves like “Classic Drama” and “Classic Comedy.”

Search for a film, by title or keyword, at the top of the Kanopy homepage.

Use filters to refine your results by genre, audio language, and caption language. If you use Kanopy with a public library, you can also filter your search results by the number of tickets required. Filter options change dynamically with search results; filters that don’t apply to your search results are hidden.

Nolan, C. (Director). (2000). Memento [Video file]. Samuel Goldwyn Films. Retrieved September 13, 2024, from Kanopy.

    Enjoy exploring Kanopy!

Published starting around 1880, the Henderson’s Directories covered many major cities of Canada, especially in the prairie region. The…
