Let’s celebrate Open Education Week 2023 this March with a month-long event – the Open Education Talks series. Beginning on the 1st of March, Open Education Talks offers weekly lunch-hour lightning presentations about the role of open education in post secondary institutions. Building on the success of last year’s Open Pedagogy Talks, this series creates another chance to share and learn about recent projects, challenges and achievements taking place in local and national open education initiatives.

Organized collaboratively between the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Thompson Rivers University, Concordia University (Edmonton) and University of British Columbia, the Open Education Talks create an accessible, virtual space to engage in conversations about open pedagogy and learning, using open educational resources, and integrating open materials and strategies in higher education. Specifically, this year presenters are being encouraged to showcase the important role of student-educator collaborations in open education.

Each week’s presentations are organized around a theme:

March 1 : Institutional Pathways and Open Scholarship

March 2: Using Open Education in Student and Academic Development

March 15: Using Open Educational Resources for Interactive Learning

March 22: Creating Open Educational Resources

March 29: Partnerships for Open Education

Register once to attend the entire series or drop in on any one of the sessions at your convenience.  The Open Education Talks take place from 12 – 1 pm (MST).

February is Black History Month, where we take the time to learn and reflect upon the history and experiences of those who make up the African Diaspora. It also gives us the opportunity to celebrate the work being done by Black People to enhance our understanding of the world and who are making a difference both locally and internationally. There are several distinguished Black scholars here at the University of Alberta whose…

By Amina Mohamed Amina is a student assistant at the Digital Scholarship and an undergraduate student studying the History of Art and Visual Culture. At the Digital Scholarship Centre, we often get asked: what is digital scholarship? This is a challenging question, as the definition of digital scholarship is a fluid, much-debated topic. We define Digital Scholarship as any type of research and academic learning that includes an aspect of technology. One…

This post was written by the Head of the Library’s Collections Strategy Unit, Trish Chatterley Article Processing Charges (APCs) can present a significant financial barrier or expense for researchers who would prefer to make their articles available in Open Access format and freely available for all to read upon publication. The University of Alberta Library is pursuing new contract models with various publishers in order to eliminate those costs for UAlberta authors,…

  • Black History Month – Celebrating Black Artists

by Elisabet Ingibergsson February 7, 2023
by Elisabet Ingibergsson February 7, 2023

February is Black History Month and we are celebrating the work and lives of Black artists.  Throughout history, the creative contributions of Black artists and countless ethnic groups have been obscured and often overlooked by the art world. The art and artefacts of a society tell a story; it can also encourage inspiration, mobilisation and healing. Black art gives voice to those previously silenced celebrating the beauty and triumph of Black culture.…
