Saris have a unique place in India

I have personally been fascinated by the sari. One of my early memories of a fashion piece that mesmerized me, was my mother’s “adapted” sari-styled deep blue attire.

With our celebration of India during the month of November, and the place that saris hold in India, I decided to learn a bit more about saris. These are some of the resources that I found on this subject at University of Alberta Library and also at our partner libraries.

Indian Sari, Black and Green Silk with sequins, 1946, found in Bloomsbury Fashion Library

Talking to one of my friends from India confirmed my expectation that the sari has a deep cultural connection to India!

    • Did you know that the sari has various wrapping styles that differ based on region?
    • Did you also know that grandmothers and mothers have the honour of passing that knowledge to their grandchildren and children?
    • Married women and young women can be distinguished based on the wrapping style of their saris.
    • The colours and fabric of saris also have their stories to tell. Based on the region, the age, and event the colour of saris change to suit a specific meaning. The materials used carry, not only the weight of social standing, but also indicate an adaptation to climate and weather.

These are just a few facts about saris to get you started.

If you are an avid, fashion-adept looking to expand your knowledge – as I am – or if you are looking for more information on saris in Indian culture, the following resources are a great starting point:

    • Saris of India : tradition and beyond
    • Sarees of India
    • The sari

The Bloomsberry Fashion Central hase a wide range of resources including images of saris and the fabrics they are made of !
