The U of A Library invited Heather Ritz, Community Social Worker with Wellness Supports (uab.ca/wellness) to share her reflections about World Day of Social Justice and the Days of Action’s plans for a Living Library at the U of A.
February 20 is World Day of Social Justice. This day is meant as a global reminder to actively make choices at all levels of society that help our communities prioritise social justice for all. As we prepare for World Day of Social Justice at the U of A, our programming team has been thinking about what can make a difference at a local level, and one thing that stands out to us is the power of people sharing stories of their lived experiences.

When I reflect on what helps me be a better community member and friend, hearing people’s lived experiences is top of the list. A dear friend of mine has a term for this – “listen first”. Listen first – it is the intentional act of putting aside what we think we know, our preconceived notions and experiences, and letting ourselves be changed by the stories of others.
Stand-out moments that come to mind for me include listening to residential school survivors share their stories at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, having conversations with friends from different backgrounds who offer their experiences, and hearing paroled individuals discuss what it’s like to reintegrate into the community
I want to keep listening. Will you join me?
The Living Library
Come to the Living Library, hosted by Days of Action. It’s a great opportunity to listen first.
Through the living library, we’re holding space to hear from community members about how mental health has been impacted by experiences like injustices, barriers, inequities, and discrimination.
Over two days 13 “Living Books” are offering to share their story.
I wholeheartedly believe that listening first contributes to empathy, belonging, and care in our campus community.

Come and listen with me – you can sign up here.
